Q: Why would you want fans that blow hot air up to the next board? This seems like a poorly designed case.

It’s about airflow. This is not producing the same amount of heat as large boards and chipsets, but unless you box it in with no cool air this fan simply directs heat away from the chip.

Q: What size are the screws and stand-offs?

Standard M3 screws, 5mm and 20mm standoffs work… but, I’ve added a PoE hat and had to change the 20mm to 30mm standoffs.

Q: Can you fit a hat on any of the pi's? i would like to use this with a respeaker4 mic on one of the pi's. altho i suppose the fan may cause issues...

I am not familiar with the repeaters. There is about 1/2" clearance above the gpio pins and the top cover. Two wires to power the fan plug into two pins at right end but you can reach the others if the 1/2" is enough, but you might have to remove top to plug it in and then replace top.

Q: Is the brown model really brown ? The pics show it as smoke gray as I like it.

It is actually smokey grey, but if you hold it up to a light, it will look brownish, but it shouldn't detract from what you are used to. I was actually worried that the new stock was all brown, but it isn't.
