Paths Beyond Ego: The Transpersonal Vision (New Consciousness Reader)

New consciousness and neuro psychology
I heard the author interviewed on YouTube at Buddha at the Gas Pump and was impressed. As the tug of war continues between "neuro-ists" (its all in the brain and perception) and consciousness advocates, Walsh (and in hsi Essential Spirituality) bridges cognitive research and self consciousness. But he leans towards trans-rationalism- where one knows from direct experience (repeatable) that human cognition and consciousness more than likely transcends the brain and uses the brain and nervous system to reflect itself into normal experience. Both are good reads and is YT interviews are worthwhile.

Terrific~
This book is one that I will definitely keep on my bookshelf for a long, long (long!) time! I bought it as a textbook for a class on transpersonal psychology. It has a great variety of topics in transpersonal psychology, short, intelligent articles that are challenging and weave well together. The editors have gathered writings by *the* big names in transpersonal psychology so that the reader has a good, foundational understanding of topics like meditation, transpersonal therapies, dreaming, and psychedelics. These aren't just a series of article written separately and compiled in a volume randomly, most (if not all) of the articles were written specifically for this volume and so they interweave and relate well to one another, sometimes referring to other sections or articles or authors to help the reader. This is an excellent read.

An Easy Read
I was so relieved and pleasantly surprised when I opened up and began to read "Paths Beyond Ego." As this was a required text for my university class of Transpersonal Psychology, and just one of many text books I have to read, this wonderfully written book makes study time a joy. So often school text is very dry and technical so as to require the use of a dictionary every paragraph, just to get the idea of what point the author is trying to relay. Roger Walsh and Frances Vaughan use brilliant examples and metaphors in the form of stories and poems that keep your interest and explain difficult concepts in the simplest ways. This is a wonderful addition to any library that focuses on transpersonal issues.

Transpersonal Psych 101
Paths Beyond Ego is a compilation of essays and articles by philosophers, psychologists and scientists that sheds some light into the field of Transpersonal Psychology. Transpersonal Psychology is a younger branch of Psychology which strings together various theories from Humanistic, Jungian, and other schools of thought, while adding a new "Transpersonal" level emphasized in many ancient Eastern traditions. If you are interested in blurring the boundaries of science and mysticism, this book is for you. Paths Beyond Ego is considered one of the basic "textbooks" for Transpersonal Psychology. Additional information about Transpersonal Psychology can be found in Maslow's: "Toward a Psychology of Being" and it's extension: "Farther Reaches of Human Nature".

This is a repurchase. I read and underlined so much on my first copy needed a clean one. Walsh and Vaughn also wrote a earlier edition Beyond Ego. Both are seminal to Transpersonal Psychology
