Owen Wister's 1902 western novel the Virginian was one of the first great novels of the American West. Set in the semi mythical town of Medicine Bow, Wyoming in the 1890s, it chronicled the lives and relationships of the people who came west and settled the wild land. Starring James Drury in the title role, the Virginian was the first 90 minute television western, airing in prime time on NBC from 1962-1971. The stellar cast included Lee J. Cobb, Doug McClure, Clu Gulager, LQ Jones and Randy Boone. Season Four brought changes to Shiloh Ranch. John Dehner joined the cast as Morgan Starr, the new boss of the ranch, and Diane Roter came onboard as Jennifer Sommers. Each week brought talented guest stars to the Virginian. Season Four's line up includes John Mitchum, Strother Martin, John Doucette, Joyce Van Patten, James MacArthur, Charles Bronson, Leslie Nielson, John Cassavetes, Ed Begley and many more!

A season of change. But, is change always for the better? I think not.
What a tumultuous season. There was the leaving of Judge Garth (Lee J. Cobb) and the replacement of Betsy's character (Roberta Shore). Cobb left just past the middle of the season. Most of the episodes after that focused on one or two of the main characters such as Trampas, Randy, or the Judge Garth replacement Morgan Star. Morgan Star was a character who was introduced about 4 episodes after Lee J. Cobb left. He created somewhat of a stir in the series. I felt that the series went downhill around the time that Lee J. Cobb left. This was Randy Boone's last season as well, man I miss his singing, he had the greatest voice. Can't find his stuff on CD. The writing just seemed to lack something and the stories became mundane. I am hoping that things pick up in the 5th season. It also seemed that the focus was off of Shiloh and onto anything else they could find. In one case a whole episode around Emmet the sheriff played by Clu Gulager. You might remember him as Billy The Kid in Pat Garret and Billy the Kid the series was called "The Tall Man" 75 episodes 1960-62. It sells right here on Amazon of course. Now I like Clu Gulager and he makes a great sheriff in the Virginian, but the show is about or supposedly about Shiloh for the most part anyway. This half season seemed to veer away from Shiloh and focus elsewhere. Not that the Virginian has not done that before, but not for a whole half season in a row. Needless to say this season was a bit of a disappointment, but still I gave it 5 stars because it had a great first half of the season. Though, Lee J. Cobb was not really in that many episodes in the first half of the season either. However, the writing seemed better. Well, I will review the 5th after I watch it. Talk you all then.

Simply the best western every produced.
The Virginian bar none is the most intelligent, clean western ever produced regularly.Importantly, all DVD’s run fine on our Sony VCR. This can be an issue with some reproductions. We had researched and actually spent more to a get a “Universal Studios” rather than Mill Creek for “The Rockford Files” and now have several corrupt discs. Could have purchased the supposedly inferior Mill Creek reproductions (from China!) for half the cost.So beware on all. But impossible to pre-test #0all discs since failure can occur in parts and you wou’t know until you get there. A big problem obviously if you Soring for a box set rather than a disc.

The Virginian, Fourth Season
I love all of the Western TV shows but The Virginian is my all time favorite. I was bummed out today when I noticed INSP took an Episode off and now only one is on in my area from 12 noon - 1:30. There used to be 2 back to back from 12 noon to 3 p.m. Owning the DVDs I can watch anytime I want to. Thanks Amazon!

Shout does it again, another knock out of the park
This season 4 of "The Virginian" has great video and color, thanks to Shout and it re-newly re-mastered entire seasons of this great western. Granted when it went to "The Men of Shiloh" it lost some of its past glory. But this 4th season even though not cheap is a great addition to my Collection. Nice DVD prints.

All families should have these DVD's at home because the quality is invaluable. Decency, mortality .......
All families should have these DVD's in their collection. These are shows the entire family can watch because of the decency, morality, humor, honesty -- and all the while in the great ol' west. The horsemanship is superb. James Drury and Doug McClure are great actors as are all on the series. Can't say enough about how great this series is and the quality of these films is A+. They have been faithfully restored to better than new quality. I will leave these as a legacy to my family so that they can know how it used to be -- when kids and adults alike could gather in front of the television and be swept away into another era. Better yet, they are left with the knowledge that good always wins out, even though the ending may not be what is desired. If anyone is intereted, Doug McClure's family and many friends are signing a petition to enter him into the Cowboy's Hall of Fame. Please consider signing as 'if he was not a real cowboy, than there ain't no such thing'. [...]

The greatest TV western series ever.
Started to watch this a while ago on UK TV... After the first series, I decided to buy the complete series of DVD Region 1 issues. However they are expensive, but thinking what you get with this superb series with such great acting and guests, and 3x 90m episodes per discs, nine discs per box set. it is good value. Filmed at Universal studios, this gets out on location a lot with less studio filming. I never get tired with this series, and for western fans, it's a treat.I recommend these Region 1 issues.

Cette saison du Virginien est toujours aussi bonne, l'image, la couleur et le son sont parfait, dommage que certains acteurs n'apparaissent pas dans tous les épisodes. Autre chose ce DVD peut être lu sur des lecteurs "région 2.
