VEL 16

Pleasantly surprising film with compelling themes of womanhood
I was pleasantly surprised by this film and how clearly intelligent it is. For a low budget science fiction film with no elaborate sets and a nearly all female, all teenage cast, they’ve constructed a film around the quality of Moon or Timecrimes, albeit without the big twist. There’s no ultra violence or nudity or sex or gore here just a compelling suspense story where you can guess where it leads but not exactly. There’s a lot of interesting symbolic conversations between characters that deserve to be discussed - “You’re just like the other girls” male dominance, etcetera, but also interesting dynamics between the girls similar to the boys in the Ender’s Game novels. If you have a teenager this might be an interesting movie to talk about and ask questions about - do you have someone in your class who is like this person, etcetera. The answers might provoke fascinating conversations.Anyway I caught a lot of overt symbolism in this film but it doesn’t bash you with any “issues” it might even arguably be an LGBT film to some viewers, depending on how you view the characters and their relationships. I’m glad I watched this movie.

Level up
Sufficiently creepy that it maintained my interest thru the whole movie. At least obvious foreshadow even was kinda unnecessary, but go with it.

Full of red herrings and plot holes
"Level 16" is what you get when you expect a spin on "Handmaid's Tale" and end up with "Never Let Me Go" (2010) or "Repo! The Genetic Opera" (2008) instead. The emphasis on "feminine virtue" and subjugation and dehumanization of girls/women leads you to believe that gender politics will be at the core of the movie. Yet the plot goes in a different direction, leaving all those references to "cleanliness" as the proverbial gun that is never fired. Their internal qualities end up irrelevant, because in the end, the only thing that matters is the quality of their skin. Their virtue is literally skin-deep."Level 16" is like a beautiful slice of Swiss cheese in terms of holes. There are so many unanswered questions. Not sure if the writers deliberately wanted to leave a bunch of loose ends for the sake of creative ambivalence or pure negligence. We are not told much about these girls' back stories. How old were they when they ended up at the school? Do they have any memory of their biological families? How did their concepts of friendship and loyalty form? These girls look forward to being adopted, so the idea of a family is part of their value system, yet they are told that the school is their family. And of course, no dystopian thriller would be complete without some Slavic henchmen. The cartoonish enforcers speak some broken pseudo-Russian gibberish. Not sure if it's a tribute to some Cold War trope or the location is supposed to have some significance. All in all, I feel this plot would have worked better as a mini series that would allow the writers to explore the back stories and the motives of the characters.

The kind of story that sticks with you.
Does anyone else see similarities between this (2018) and the anime The Promised Neverland (2019)?

Well Done
A beautiful film with a strong feminist message. Downtempo horror/thriller. The creepiest aspect of this concept is that it resembles real-life scenarios occurring here and now behind closed doors.

This one got me
This is an atmospheric horror flick and it is well done. The secret, which I won't reveal, caught me off guard which is rare in today's horror flicks. Action is limited. This is primarily pcychological and the direction that I thought it was going in was nowhere close to where it actually went. Excellent acting.

Great Movie!
I was scrolling through Prime videos when I found this movie. Honestly, I was not expecting much. However, there were some great twists and turns. The ending left a bit to be desired, but maybe I am just not a fan of happy endings????

Level 16 is a well made movie for what is
I liked Level 16. I wasn't sure that I would. It didn't seem like it because it's not the kind of movie I usually watch, but I did based on it's good reviews. It's well acted especially by the lead part Vivien played by Katie Douglas and her friend Sophia played by Celina Martin. The parts played by the Doctor (Peter Outerbridge) and Miss Brixil (Sara Canning) were also very good. The script is fine. I can tell it's a low budget movie, and it was very well-made for what it was. As the movie went on, I liked it more and more and was satisfied with it's ending which isn't always the case with movies that I even like. Katie Douglas seems like a movie star waiting to happen. I would suggest Prime find a good script to put her in.

Film assez interessant

Not in English!
I thought when you bought the DVD, it would come with an option to have it in English! But no! Now wasted my money on this DVD!

Spannend
